Doepfer Dark Energy I (4x) stacked with MIDI Thru

This is a video I recently found, dated from a year ago. Not proud of it. Never published, because it is rather boring or even terrible. But as for the many questions about stacking Dark Energy's I will post this. No playing skills. It shows 4 stacked dark energy's. In this way you can play polyphonic. However, if every DE has it's own sound, and that sound is depending on which key is touched first, you'll never know which DE you will hear first.. So striking 4 the same keys more times after eachother will sound different by each strike. The fifth sound you hear comes from the WMD Synchrodyne which is connected to the cv output of DE1. The DE's are internally connected via MIDI thru (as you can see none of the DE's is CV connected). In that way the keyboard controls the DE's via MIDI, but every DE has its CV output, so you can connect other cv controlled devices to every DE....(even the Pitch Wheel or other MIDI commands send to filters for example) So instead of 4 sounds per chord you can add many other sounds per note of the chord. This is one of the many advantages of this marvellous semi-modular synthesizer. Soon I will show the MIDI stacked combination of Dark Energy I and Dark Energy II .....

Doepfer Dark Energy I & II Comparison (1+2)

Doepfer Dark Energy 2 mounted to Dark Energy 1.
Trying to compare the sounds of the two machines.
First part is cv controlled by SH-101.
Second part MIDI controlled by Dark time Sequencer.
Just turning the knobs to check out differences...

Quote from the Doepfer site: "For users with electronic knowledge the Dark Energy II offers much more internal expansion features than the Dark Energy I. For example terminals (pin headers) for these features are available: VCO Hard Sync, linear VCO FM, rectangle and sawtoooth output of the VCO, lowpass/bandpass/highpass output of the VC, Reset/Sync/Direction for each LFO, rectangle and triangle output for each LFO. In addition an improved version of the glide option is is the planning stage that allows to turn on/off the glide function via Midi control change messages."

Doepfer Dark Energy 2 (Dark Energy II) sound and some inside pictures..

Quick demo of the Dark Energy II (2), random turning the knobs. Triggering by Dark Time. Also some pictures of the inside. No SEM chip anymore, no triangle so it is different from the Dark Energy I. Comparison I+II at: http://youtu.be/q1NND3W5hlo

The Dark Quaternity ++ (Third Cabinet/Sixth Source)

Polyphonic Modular Analog Synthesizer based on Doefer Dark Energy.
Pictures of the cabinet here:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doepfer Dark Energy / Dark Trilogy with A-103 and A-108 (303 and Moog filter)

Try out of which filter should be added in a new and final Dark Trilogy design.
Left pitchwheel controls the 303 filter (Doepfer A-103) for Dark Energy 02.
Right pitchwheel controls the Moog filter (Doepfer A-108) for Dark Energy 01.
Filters are used from the Dark Quaternity and therefore you can only hear them and not see them. Settings of the filters are fixed. No playing skills, Just a demo of the sound through the mentioned filters.... (I think the A-108 will be the right addition for the DT or maybe both...)

Doepfer Dark Energy / Dark Trilogy and A-156 (controlled by Dark Energy LFO1)

This is a demo of the Doepfer A-156 quantizer module. In stead of control by the A-178 theremin module, the A-156 is controlled by the LFO1 of the first Dark Energy.
Sounds: Doepfer Dark Energy
Sequence: Doepfer Dark Time
Drums: Roland TR-606
Prototype Test Cabinet: The Dark Trilogy II

Dark Mission (Transmission 02): The Evolution of The Dark Quaternity..(pictures)

Polyphonic Modular Synthesizer. Slideshow-video with pictures of the first DIY prototype synth's which are based on Doepfer's Dark Energy.
It shows The Dark Trilogy (based on 3 DE's) and The Dark Quaternity (based on 4 DE's) as well as the second and third cabinet on The Dark Quaternity.
The video shows some pictures of the first time! construction. Following constructions will be different (learning process..)
"Transmission" (The Robot voice) comes from the "Flame Talking Synth".
With the third cabinet on the Dark Quaternity this project is ended for now..

No interference.... Doepfer Dark Energy LFO1 out controls 8-step sequence (A160/A161)

Very slow 8-step sequence. This time controlled by LFO1 of a Dark Energy through the Doepfer A-160/A-161 back to the Dark Energy and to the other Dark Energy's which are built in the Dark Quaternity. Very slow steps. The ladder you hear is one note through ADSR and A-156 quantizer. Pitch of the clock-signals controlled by A-138.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doepfer 8-step sequence by Dark Energy, A-160, A-161 and A-138

Testing the A-161 possibilities as a sequencer. Trigger path from BassDrum trig out to A-160/A161 to 2x A-138(for pitch)(4:47) to 5x Doepfer Dark Energy. Some signals through a Quad ADSR. One of the 8 notes through an A-156 quantizer. It works fine but the total costs of A-160/161 and 2x A-138 are almost the costs of an A-155 sequencer. But if you already have them for trigger purposes it works well as a sequencer. The high tones at the beginning are caused by an output of the A-161 connected to the VCA A input of one of the Dark Energy's which runs LFO1.

Magic Ceramic Theremin Lamp Doepfer A-178

The first test of the Magic Ceramic Theremin lamp. It is developed as a peculiar piece for the opening of the Exibition of several ceramists in Gallery Artibrak. from november until 28th of December 2011.
A theremin is normally stepless, but in this case an A-156 is used as a quantizer..

Small explanation for those who are not familiar:
In this magic piece of ceramic two antenna's are integrated. One antenna for the volume and one for the pitch. The instrument does not have to be touched. The volume can be controlled by your left hand (when approaching it the volume increases), the pitch can be controlled by your right hand (when approaching it, the pitch of the sound goes up). By approaching the antenna's you are influencing the potential difference. Just like the antenna of your transistor radio which functions well or not when approaching it.

The Magic Ceramic is based on the original Theremin invented by Léon Theremin in 1919. That electronic instrument is stepless variable and very expressive. It sounds like an opera voice or violin.

This ceramic version of the instrument has a much more variety than it's original. You can make the sound stepless or let it be quantized, so that you hear a real tonescale/musical scale. The sinus-tone of the Magic Ceramic is quantized (chopped in pieces), and in the way it is presented now only the Minor notes are heard. (like the black keys on a piano) In this way the steps between the notes are bigger and easier to distinguish. Other possibilities are just Major notes or the complete tonescale, quantized or not. There is also a small sampler added, so when you reach the highest note a spoken voice can be heard.

Doepfer A-178 Theremin test with very close wired antennas

I am asked to built a theremin in a piece of ceramics for the opening of an exibition of several ceramists. To built it in the antenna wires have to be very close to eachother to pass through the bottleneck of a vase. Therefore i tested it today and it works!
A-100 Modules used for this: 2x A-178 Theremin, A-130 VCA, A-120 VCF, A-140 ADSR. A-110 VCO and A-156 Quantizer. (Marvellous module with Major or Minor arpeggio's, later more on this one!)
The left hand controls the volume. The right hand controls the pitch (CV).

Doepfer Dark Quaternity and Philips BEM 004

Polyphonc Modular Synthesizer. First video of the Dark Quaternity. Today the Philips BEM 004 sine-square wave generator arrived so I took this as an opportunity to hook it up as a sound source of one of the Dark Energy's in the Dark Quaternity. This video is shot in one take with no external audio editing, no MIDI, no multitrack, but has a pour audio quality. Therefore you can not hear the real low sound ot the BEM which comes in at 3:50 and 5:30.(sorry for that)
Controllers of the DQ used in this video: Doepfer A-198, A-178 controlling DE1.
Filters of the DQ used in this video: A-108 (controlled by A-198 Ribbon Controller)

Polyphonic Dark Energy (demo of 4 stacked Doepfer Dark Energy synths)

Polyphonic Modular Synhtesizer.
Just a simple demo of the polyphonic possibility by chaining 4x dark energy to play four note chords.
Just one MIDI-cable from keyboard to Dark Energy 1, the other three are chained internally (two wires each and changing some jumpers).
More info about polyphonic DE on http://www.creativegallery.nl (Dark Trilogy)
Chords: Doepfer Dark Energy
Noise: WMD Gamma Wavesource (seqeunced by makenoise rene and tiptop z8000)
Lay back and sleep well...

Theremin: sound- and sequencecontrol by approaching....Doepfer A-100

Try-out of a Thereminlike application to make music only by approaching your hands to an object.
Control: approaching 2 antennawires connected to A-178
3x Soundsources: A-111-5 (Dark Energy), A-110 VCO sinus, sawtooth through A-113 (Subharmonics), WMD Gamma Wave Source.
Quantizing theremin signal: A-156
Bassdrum/hihat: Schlagzwerg
Extra triggering: Hihat through A-160/A-161 clocksequencer/divider (1/2) to trigger-in A-156
Extra sequence for WMD by Makenoise Rene also controlled by CV out of A-156
Bassdrum and percussive very low bassound from the Dark Energy are only on the left channel, sorry for that.
Phaser from FEX800 (Dark Quaternity)
